Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping rates are calculated at checkout based on your order size and weight, delivery address and available carrier services. We use Australia Post and other carriers to provide suitable delivery options and rates.

Dispatch

Orders are generally packed and dispatched within 0–2 business days (Monday–Friday), excluding public holidays and unusually busy periods.

Delivery Times

Delivery times begin from the date your order is dispatched. As a general guide, Australia Post Parcel Post usually takes 2–6 business days, while Express Post generally takes 1–3 business days where available.

Regional and remote destinations may take longer. Orders containing seed sent to Western Australia, Tasmania or other biosecurity-controlled destinations may also require additional processing or inspection.

Delivery estimates are provided as a guide only and can be affected by carrier delays, weather, peak periods and biosecurity requirements.

Tracking

All shipped orders include tracking. Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive an email with your tracking information so you can follow its progress.

Authority to Leave

Depending on the carrier and delivery service, your parcel may be left in a safe location if no one is available to receive it. You can provide delivery instructions during checkout where supported by the carrier; however, specific delivery requests cannot always be guaranteed.

Local Pickup – Riverstone, NSW

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Organic Oat Groats – Dehulled Whole Oats

Australian-grown organic oat groats for sprouting, porridge, grain bowls, soups, baking and home-milled oat flour. Versatile dehulled whole oats available in bulk sizes Australia-wide.

Description

Organic Oat Groats for Sprouting, Cooking & Milling

Enjoy oats in one of their least processed edible forms with our organic oat groats. Oat groats are whole oat kernels with the tough outer hull removed while the edible kernel remains intact, giving them a pleasantly chewy texture and mild, creamy and slightly nutty flavour.

These versatile whole oats can be sprouted, cooked for porridge and savoury meals, or ground into fresh oat flour. They are a useful pantry grain for breakfast bowls, salads, soups, casseroles, baking and home grain milling.

Sprout Whole Oat Groats at Home

These oat groats are supplied as viable whole grain suitable for short sprouting. Because the protective outer hull has been removed, groats are more delicate than unhulled oat seed and should be handled gently during soaking, rinsing and draining.

Use a relatively short soak, maintain thorough drainage and harvest once a small root has developed. Oat groat sprouts are best kept short rather than grown into long shoots.

If your goal is to grow dense trays of green oat grass rather than short grain sprouts, choose Organic Oat Grass Microgreen Seeds. That product uses whole unhulled oat seed specifically suited to tray growing.

Cook Oat Groats for Porridge & Whole-Grain Meals

Oat groats have considerably more texture than rolled, quick or instant oats. Simmer them until tender for a hearty whole-oat porridge, or retain a pleasantly chewy texture for grain bowls, salads, soups, casseroles and savoury side dishes.

Overnight soaking is optional for cooking but can soften the grain and shorten the time required on the stovetop. Cooked oat groats can also be prepared in larger batches and refrigerated for convenient meals throughout the week.

Mill Oat Groats into Fresh Oat Flour

Dry oat groats can be ground using a suitable grain mill or high-powered grinder to produce homemade oat flour. Use freshly milled oat flour in pancakes, muffins, biscuits, breads and other suitable baking recipes, either on its own where appropriate or blended with other flours.

With suitable grain-processing equipment, oat groats can also be cracked, coarsely ground or flaked to create different homemade oat preparations.

Home & Bulk Organic Oat Groats

OzSprout organic oat groats are available from 500g through to 20kg bulk quantities, making them suitable for home sprouters, regular cooks, bakers, cafés, food businesses and larger-volume users.

How to Sprout, Cook & Use Oat Groats

Organic oat groats are whole dehulled oat kernels that can be sprouted, cooked for porridge and savoury dishes, or milled into fresh oat flour.

How to Sprout Oat Groats

Oat groats are more delicate than whole unhulled oat seed because their protective outer hull has been removed. Handle them gently and avoid prolonged soaking or excessive moisture.

  1. Clean your equipment: Wash your hands and thoroughly clean the sprouting jar, lid and utensils.
  2. Measure the groats: Add approximately 3 tablespoons of oat groats to a clean 500ml sprouting jar.
  3. Rinse gently: Rinse the groats with cool, clean drinking-quality water.
  4. Soak: Cover generously with water and soak for approximately 4–6 hours. Avoid unnecessarily long soaking.
  5. Drain thoroughly: Discard the soaking water, rinse gently again and drain as completely as practical.
  6. Position for airflow: Keep the jar tilted with the opening facing downward so excess moisture can escape and air can circulate.
  7. Rinse regularly: Gently rinse and thoroughly drain approximately 2 times daily. Avoid vigorous shaking that may damage the exposed kernels.
  8. Maintain suitable conditions: Keep the jar at approximately 18–22°C, away from hot direct sunlight.
  9. Watch for germination: Small white roots should begin emerging as the groats germinate.
  10. Harvest: Harvest once short roots have developed, generally within approximately 2–4 days. Oat groat sprouts are best harvested while the roots remain relatively short and the grain is still firm.

Tips for Sprouting Oat Groats

  • Use whole, intact groats.
  • Handle gently during rinsing.
  • Do not overcrowd the jar.
  • Drain thoroughly after every rinse.
  • Never leave the groats sitting in standing water.
  • Maintain good airflow.
  • Keep the sprouts relatively short.
  • Discard any batch showing obvious mould, slime, decay or an abnormal smell.
  • For growing green oat grass, use whole unhulled oat seed rather than oat groats.

Harvest & Storage

Give the finished sprouts a final gentle rinse and drain them thoroughly.

Transfer to a clean covered container and refrigerate promptly.

Grain sprouts are best used promptly after harvest. Discard them if their appearance, smell or texture deteriorates.

Food Safety

Raw sprouts can carry harmful bacteria even when carefully grown at home.

Always use clean equipment and drinking-quality water, maintain thorough drainage and refrigerate harvested sprouts promptly.

People at increased risk from foodborne illness, including pregnant women, young children, some older people and people with compromised immunity, should avoid raw or lightly cooked sprouts.

Thorough cooking reduces the food-safety risk associated with raw sprouts.

How to Cook Oat Groats

Oat groats can also be cooked directly without sprouting.

  1. Rinse: Rinse the groats thoroughly under clean running water.
  2. Optional soak: Soak for approximately 8–12 hours if you want to soften the grain and reduce cooking time.
  3. Drain: If soaked, discard the soaking water and rinse again.
  4. Add water: Use approximately 1 cup oat groats to 3 cups water as a practical starting ratio.
  5. Bring to the boil: Combine the groats and water in a saucepan and bring to the boil.
  6. Simmer: Reduce the heat, cover and simmer gently for approximately 45–60 minutes, or until tender and pleasantly chewy.
  7. Check during cooking: Add a little additional hot water if required before the groats are tender.
  8. Rest: Remove from the heat and allow to stand covered for approximately 5–10 minutes.
  9. Drain if necessary: Remove any excess cooking liquid before serving.

Ways to Use Cooked Oat Groats

  • Whole-oat porridge
  • Breakfast bowls
  • Grain bowls
  • Salads
  • Soups and stews
  • Casseroles
  • Savoury side dishes
  • Meal-prep bowls

How to Make Oat Flour

  1. Make sure the oat groats are completely dry.
  2. Add a manageable quantity to a suitable grain mill or high-powered grinder.
  3. Grind until the desired flour consistency is reached.
  4. Sieve if a finer flour is preferred.
  5. Store the freshly milled flour in a tightly sealed container.

Use oat flour in pancakes, muffins, biscuits, breads and other suitable baking recipes.

Storage

Store dry oat groats tightly sealed in a cool, dry and dark location away from heat and moisture.

For longer-term storage, refrigeration or freezing in an airtight container can help maintain quality.

Freshly milled oat flour has more surface area exposed to air than intact groats, so keep it tightly sealed and refrigerate or freeze it if it will not be used promptly.
