Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Green Sorrel Microgreen Seeds

Grow Green Sorrel microgreens with delicate bright green leaves and a distinctive lemony, tangy flavour. A specialty micro herb ideal for salads, seafood, egg dishes, sauces, sandwiches and fresh culinary garnishes.

Description

Green Sorrel Microgreen Seeds with Fresh Lemony Flavour

Green Sorrel Microgreen Seeds produce delicate bright green microgreens with a distinctive tart, citrus-like flavour. Their refreshing lemony character sets them apart from peppery radish, mustard and rocket, making Sorrel an excellent specialty crop for growers looking to add a different flavour profile to their microgreen range.

Green Sorrel is a moderately slow-growing micro herb rather than an ultra-fast cotyledon crop. The fine seed requires no pre-soaking and should be sown shallowly onto a consistently moist growing medium. Under suitable conditions, microgreens can generally be harvested in approximately 14–21 days, with a longer growing period producing more developed true leaves.

Bright Green Leaves & Tangy Citrus Flavour

The young plants develop slender pale-green stems and bright green foliage with a crisp, tender texture. Their characteristic sharp, lemon-like flavour comes naturally from the Sorrel plant and becomes increasingly noticeable as the leaves develop.

Use freshly harvested microgreens in salads, sandwiches and wraps, or pair them with seafood, eggs, potatoes, vegetables and creamy sauces. Their acidity also makes them useful as a fresh garnish where a small amount of greenery can provide both colour and a noticeable flavour contrast.

For a more visually striking Sorrel microgreen with bright green leaves and distinctive crimson veining, see our Red Veined Sorrel Microgreen Seeds.

A Specialty Microgreen Worth Growing to True Leaf

For the most recognisable Sorrel crop, allow the seedlings to progress beyond the earliest cotyledon stage and begin developing their first true leaves. Moderate seeding density, consistent moisture, good light and airflow help produce an even tray without overcrowding the delicate foliage.

Grow Beyond the Microgreen Stage

The same seed can also be grown for baby leaf and mature culinary Sorrel. Mature plants form productive perennial clumps of green leaves that can be harvested progressively for salads, sauces, soups and other savoury dishes.

How to Grow Green Sorrel Microgreens

Green Sorrel is a moderately slow-growing specialty micro herb with bright green foliage and a distinctive tart, lemony flavour. For the most characteristic crop, allow the first true leaves to begin developing before harvest.

What You Need

  • Green Sorrel Microgreen Seeds
  • A shallow tray with drainage holes
  • A solid lower tray for bottom watering
  • Fine seed-raising mix, coco coir or another suitable fine growing medium
  • Clean drinking-quality water
  • Fine mist sprayer
  • A second tray or suitable germination cover
  • Bright natural light or suitable grow lights
  • Clean scissors or a sharp harvesting knife

Seed Rate

For a standard 25 × 50cm microgreen tray, use approximately:

6–10g dry seed per tray

Spread the seed evenly across the growing surface.

Use the lower end of the range if you plan to grow the crop further into the true-leaf stage.

Pre-Soak

No pre-soaking required.

Sow Green Sorrel seed dry.

The fine seed is easier to distribute evenly before it becomes wet.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Clean and thoroughly rinse trays, covers and growing tools.
  2. Add approximately 2–3cm of fine seed-raising mix, coco coir or another suitable growing medium.
  3. Moisten the medium evenly and allow excess water to drain.
  4. Spread approximately 6–10g of dry seed evenly across the surface.
  5. Gently press the seed into contact with the growing medium.
  6. Keep the seed shallow. A very light layer of vermiculite may be used if preferred.
  7. Mist gently with clean drinking-quality water.
  8. Cover during early establishment.
  9. Keep covered for approximately 2–4 days.
  10. Remove the cover once seedlings begin establishing.
  11. Move the tray into bright indirect natural light or beneath suitable grow lights.
  12. Maintain good airflow.
  13. Bottom water once the roots establish.
  14. Allow early true leaves to develop before harvesting.

Covered Establishment

Use approximately:

2–4 days

of covered establishment.

A second tray or suitable cover can help maintain moisture during early germination.

Remove the cover once seedlings begin emerging strongly rather than extending the blackout unnecessarily.

For more information, see Microgreen Blackout Explained.

Germination

Expect germination in approximately:

5–10 days

Green Sorrel generally emerges more gradually than radish, broccoli or mustard.

Maintain consistent moisture and allow the crop time to establish rather than compensating with excessive watering.

Temperature

Aim for approximately:

18–22°C

Sorrel performs well under moderate conditions.

Slightly cooler temperatures after emergence can help maintain compact growth.

Light & True-Leaf Development

Once uncovered, provide bright indirect natural light or suitable grow lights.

The crop begins with simple green cotyledons before developing increasingly distinctive Sorrel true leaves.

Allowing some true-leaf development generally provides:

  • more recognisable Sorrel foliage;
  • stronger lemony flavour;
  • greater visual interest; and
  • a more substantial culinary micro herb.

Watering

During germination, keep the surface consistently moist using a gentle mist where required.

Avoid flooding or repeatedly allowing the shallow seed layer to dry.

Once roots establish, bottom watering is preferable.

For detailed guidance, see How to Water Microgreens: Misting vs Bottom Watering.

Keep the growing medium evenly moist without leaving standing water beneath the tray.

Harvest & Storage

Harvest approximately:

14–21 days from sowing

Green Sorrel microgreens are generally ready when:

  • the crop is bright green;
  • cotyledons are fully open;
  • early true leaves are beginning to develop;
  • shoots are approximately 4–7cm tall;
  • foliage remains tender; and
  • the characteristic lemony flavour is clearly developed.

Cut cleanly just above the growing medium using clean scissors or a sharp harvesting knife.

For more detailed guidance, see How to Harvest & Store Microgreens.

Refrigerate promptly in a clean container. If washed before refrigeration, drain and dry thoroughly first.

Colour & Crop Characteristics

Green Sorrel typically develops:

  • bright green foliage;
  • pale green stems;
  • tender leaves;
  • a tart, citrus-like flavour; and
  • increasingly distinctive true leaves as the crop matures.

For a contrasting Sorrel crop with decorative crimson-red veins, see Red Veined Sorrel Microgreen Seeds.

Growing as Baby Leaf

For baby-leaf production:

  1. Sow considerably less densely than for microgreens.
  2. Allow more room between plants.
  3. Continue growing beyond the microgreen stage.
  4. Provide good light.
  5. Maintain consistent moisture.
  6. Harvest tender young leaves progressively.

Growing Green Sorrel to Maturity

Green Sorrel can also be grown as a perennial culinary herb.

For mature plants:

  1. Sow shallowly at approximately 3–5mm deep.
  2. Maintain consistent moisture during establishment.
  3. Thin or transplant plants to approximately 25–30cm apart.
  4. Grow in fertile, well-drained soil.
  5. Provide full sun to partial shade.
  6. Harvest young outer leaves progressively.

Established plants can regrow after harvesting and provide repeated leaf crops.

Root Hairs vs Mould

Fine white root hairs can occasionally be mistaken for mould.

Root hairs generally:

  • grow directly from individual roots;
  • appear relatively evenly; and
  • become less noticeable immediately after watering.

Mould is more likely to:

  • spread irregularly between seedlings;
  • form web-like patches;
  • persist after watering; or
  • occur alongside slime, discolouration or unpleasant odours.

If you are uncertain, see Mould vs Root Hairs on Sprouts & Microgreens.

Discard crops showing obvious spoilage.

Clean Growing / Food Safety

Use clean trays, fresh growing medium, drinking-quality water and clean harvesting equipment.

Maintain controlled moisture, good drainage and adequate airflow.

Sorrel naturally contains oxalates, which contribute to its characteristic tart flavour. People who have been advised to limit dietary oxalates should follow their relevant medical or dietary guidance.

Discard microgreens showing mould, slime, decay, abnormal discolouration or unpleasant smells.

Seed Storage

Store unused Green Sorrel seed sealed in a cool, dry and dark place away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

For longer-term storage, refrigeration can help maintain viability. Keep refrigerated seed sealed while it returns to room temperature before opening to reduce condensation.
