Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping rates are calculated at checkout based on your order size and weight, delivery address and available carrier services. We use Australia Post and other carriers to provide suitable delivery options and rates.

Dispatch

Orders are generally packed and dispatched within 0–2 business days (Monday–Friday), excluding public holidays and unusually busy periods.

Delivery Times

Delivery times begin from the date your order is dispatched. As a general guide, Australia Post Parcel Post usually takes 2–6 business days, while Express Post generally takes 1–3 business days where available.

Regional and remote destinations may take longer. Orders containing seed sent to Western Australia, Tasmania or other biosecurity-controlled destinations may also require additional processing or inspection.

Delivery estimates are provided as a guide only and can be affected by carrier delays, weather, peak periods and biosecurity requirements.

Tracking

All shipped orders include tracking. Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive an email with your tracking information so you can follow its progress.

Authority to Leave

Depending on the carrier and delivery service, your parcel may be left in a safe location if no one is available to receive it. You can provide delivery instructions during checkout where supported by the carrier; however, specific delivery requests cannot always be guaranteed.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Alfalfa Sprouting Seeds

Grow crisp alfalfa sprouts in around 5–6 days with Australian-grown Aurora alfalfa sprouting seeds, with a current germination rate of 94%. Available in home and bulk sizes.

Description

Australian Alfalfa Sprouting Seeds for Fresh Home-Grown Sprouts

Grow fresh, crisp sprouts at home with Australian-grown alfalfa sprouting seeds. Alfalfa is a classic choice for home sprouting thanks to its mild flavour, delicate crunch and straightforward indoor growing method. No soil or garden is required — just suitable seed, clean drinking-quality water and a Glass Sprouting Jar or other purpose-built sprouter.

OzSprout's current Aurora variety is grown in Australia and has a listed germination rate of 94%. Alfalfa is also commonly known as lucerne in Australia and is well suited to year-round indoor sprouting.

Australian-Grown Aurora Alfalfa

Aurora alfalfa produces fine, slender sprouts from relatively small seed. The seed expands considerably during germination, producing a generous volume of sprouts from a modest quantity of dry seed.

This makes alfalfa suitable for beginners as well as customers who grow sprouts regularly. Current variety, origin, batch and germination information is available in the Specifications tab.

Mild Flavour & Delicate Crunch

Fresh alfalfa sprouts have a mild, slightly nutty flavour with a tender, crisp texture. Their subtle flavour makes them easy to add to sandwiches, wraps, salads and grain bowls, or use as a fresh garnish for savoury meals.

Their mild character also makes alfalfa useful for combining with stronger-flavoured sprouts.

Create Your Own Sprouting Seed Mix

Alfalfa can be combined with compatible small sprouting seeds to create blends with different flavours, colours and textures. Try mild Red Clover Sprouting Seeds, fresh Broccoli Sprouting Seeds or peppery Daikon Radish Sprouting Seeds.

When combining varieties, start with a small test batch and avoid overcrowding the jar, as different seeds can germinate and develop at slightly different rates.

Home Packs & Bulk Alfalfa Sprouting Seeds

OzSprout alfalfa seed is available from convenient home-growing packs through to bulk quantities for frequent sprouters, retailers, resellers and commercial growers across Australia.

Allergen information: Packed in a facility that also handles wheat and other grains.

How to Grow Alfalfa Sprouts

Alfalfa sprouts can be grown indoors throughout the year using a clean Glass Sprouting Jar or purpose-built sprouter. Regular rinsing, thorough drainage and good airflow are important throughout the growing process.

If you are new to jar sprouting, see How to Grow Sprouts in a Jar for an overview of the general method.

What You Need

  • Approximately 1.5 tablespoons of alfalfa sprouting seed for a 500ml jar
  • A clean 500ml wide-mouth glass jar or purpose-built sprouter
  • A fine-mesh sprouting lid or suitable draining screen
  • A draining stand, rack or bowl
  • Clean, drinking-quality water

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Clean your equipment: Wash your hands and thoroughly clean the jar, lid and any utensils before beginning.
  2. Measure the seed: Add approximately 1.5 tablespoons of dry alfalfa seed to a 500ml sprouting jar. Avoid overcrowding because alfalfa produces a large volume of sprouts as it grows.
  3. Rinse and soak: Rinse the seeds thoroughly with clean drinking-quality water, then cover generously with fresh water and soak for approximately 6–8 hours.
  4. Drain thoroughly: Empty the soaking water, rinse the seeds again and drain completely. Position the jar at an angle with the opening facing downward so excess water can escape while air continues to circulate.
  5. Rinse regularly: Rinse and thoroughly drain the sprouts 2–3 times each day. An additional rinse may be useful during warmer conditions. Avoid leaving standing water in the jar.
  6. Allow the sprouts to develop: Keep the jar in a well-ventilated position away from hot direct sunlight. Continue rinsing and draining regularly as the sprouts develop.
  7. Green before harvest: Once the small leaves begin to open, move the jar into bright indirect light before harvest if you prefer greener sprouts. Avoid hot direct sunlight.
  8. Harvest: Alfalfa sprouts are typically ready after approximately 5–6 days, depending on growing conditions. Harvest when they are fresh, crisp and have reached your preferred size.

Tips for Best Results

  • Do not overcrowd the jar — a relatively small quantity of alfalfa seed produces a large volume of sprouts.
  • Keep the jar tilted between rinses so excess water can continue to drain.
  • Avoid leaving standing water around the developing sprouts.
  • Maintain good airflow, particularly during warm or humid weather.
  • If the sprouts clump together, gently loosen them while rinsing rather than compacting them.
  • Fine white root hairs can sometimes appear around young sprout roots. If you are unsure whether white growth is normal root hair or spoilage, see Mould vs Root Hairs on Sprouts & Microgreens.
  • Discard sprouts that become slimy, unusually discoloured, decayed or develop a sour, rotten or strongly musty smell.

Harvest & Storage

Give the finished sprouts a final thorough rinse and drain them as completely as practical.

For an easy way to remove the loose seed hulls that separate from alfalfa sprouts at harvest, as well as washing, draining and refrigerating the finished sprouts, see How to Harvest, Wash & Store Sprouts After Growing.

Transfer the well-drained sprouts to a clean covered container and refrigerate promptly. Use while fresh and discard them if their appearance, texture or smell deteriorates.

Food Safety

Raw sprouts can carry harmful bacteria, and careful home-growing practices cannot guarantee that sprouts will be bacteria-free.

Always use clean equipment and drinking-quality water, maintain thorough drainage and refrigerate harvested sprouts promptly.

People at increased risk from foodborne illness, including pregnant women, young children, some older people and people with compromised immunity, should avoid raw or lightly cooked sprouts. Thorough cooking reduces the food-safety risk associated with sprouts.
