Care information

Proper cleaning, drying and storage will help keep your sprouting equipment hygienic and in good working condition. Always follow any product-specific care instructions supplied with the item.

Cleaning: Wash reusable jars, trays, lids, screens and other growing components thoroughly before first use and after every crop. Use warm water and a mild detergent, then rinse well with clean water.

Sanitising: Equipment used for growing edible sprouts or microgreens should be sanitised regularly using a suitable food-contact sanitising method that is compatible with the product material. Rinse where required by the sanitiser instructions.

Drying: Allow all components to dry completely before reassembling or storing. Trapped moisture can encourage mould, odours and microbial growth.

During Growing: Keep drainage holes, mesh screens and ventilation areas clear so water can drain freely and air can circulate around the crop. Remove seed residue and organic matter between growing cycles.

Handling: Avoid abrasive scourers, harsh chemicals or excessive force that may scratch, warp or damage plastic, glass, mesh or other components. Do not expose equipment to high heat unless the product is specifically rated for it.

Inspection: Check reusable equipment regularly for cracks, chips, damaged screens, worn seals or other deterioration. Replace damaged components that can no longer be cleaned effectively or used safely.

Storage: Store clean, completely dry equipment in a dry, well-ventilated area away from excessive heat, direct sunlight and contamination.

Best Care: Product materials and cleaning requirements can vary, so follow any specific washing, dishwasher, temperature or maintenance instructions shown on the product packaging or product page.

Delivery Times

Delivery times begin from the date your order is dispatched. As a general guide, Australia Post Parcel Post usually takes 2–6 business days, while Express Post generally takes 1–3 business days where available.

Regional and remote destinations may take longer. Orders containing seed sent to Western Australia, Tasmania or other biosecurity-controlled destinations may also require additional processing or inspection.

Delivery estimates are provided as a guide only and can be affected by carrier delays, weather, peak periods and biosecurity requirements.

Tracking

All shipped orders include tracking. Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive an email with your tracking information so you can follow its progress.

Authority to Leave

Depending on the carrier and delivery service, your parcel may be left in a safe location if no one is available to receive it. You can provide delivery instructions during checkout where supported by the carrier; however, specific delivery requests cannot always be guaranteed.

Local Pickup – Riverstone, NSW

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Sprouting Starter Kit – 2 Glass Jars & 6 Seed Varieties

Start home sprouting with two reusable glass sprouting jars, six different sprouting seeds and simple instructions. Choose from two seed quantities and grow a range of leafy and legume sprouts.

Description

Sprouting Starter Kit for Beginners

Discover how easy home sprouting can be with the OzSprout Sprouting Starter Kit. Designed for beginners, the kit combines two reusable glass sprouting jars with six different seed varieties, giving you a practical introduction to growing fresh sprouts from your kitchen benchtop.

The selection includes broccoli, alfalfa, Sango radish, chickpeas, red lentils and blue field peas. Each variety produces a different flavour, texture and style of sprout, from delicate leafy greens through to larger, substantial legume sprouts.

Six Different Sprouting Seeds to Try

The kit gives you the opportunity to experiment with several types of jar-grown sprouts rather than starting with a single variety.

Broccoli, alfalfa and Sango radish produce finer leafy sprouts, while chickpeas, red lentils and blue peas develop larger sprouts with a firmer, more substantial texture.

When you are ready to replenish your seed supply, varieties are also available separately, including Broccoli Sprouting Seeds, Alfalfa Sprouting Seeds, Chickpea Sprouting Seeds and Red Lentil Sprouting Seeds.

Choose from Two Starter Kit Sizes

Box 1 includes two glass sprouting jars, six seed varieties and sprouting instructions.

Box 2 includes the same two sprouting jars and six seed varieties with approximately double the total seed quantity, making it better suited to households planning to sprout more regularly.

Two Jars for Flexible Growing

Having two jars allows you to grow different varieties separately or stagger your growing cycles so crops become ready at different times.

This is particularly useful because the six included seeds do not all share the same soaking time, seed quantity or harvest period. For the most reliable results, start by growing each variety separately and follow its individual instructions.

From Leafy Sprouts to Crunchy Legumes

Broccoli and alfalfa produce mild, tender sprouts, while Sango radish adds a stronger peppery character. Chickpeas, lentils and blue peas produce larger sprouts with more bite and substance.

Once harvested, sprouts can be used in salads, sandwiches, wraps, grain bowls and other meals as appropriate for the particular variety. Larger legume sprouts are also well suited to cooked dishes.

Reusable Equipment for Ongoing Home Sprouting

The glass jars and draining lids are reusable. After each crop, wash and dry the equipment thoroughly before beginning another batch.

Once the original seed selection has been used, replacement sprouting seeds can be purchased separately, allowing the jars to continue being used for future crops.

How to Use Your Sprouting Starter Kit

The six seed varieties supplied with this kit have different seed quantities, soaking times and harvest periods. For the most reliable results, grow each variety separately rather than applying one set of instructions to every seed.

Before You Start

You will need:

  • Sprouting Starter Kit
  • Clean drinking-quality water
  • A bowl, rack or suitable draining surface for each jar
  • Clean container for refrigerating harvested sprouts

Wash your hands and thoroughly clean the jars and lids before beginning.

Avoid overcrowding the jars, particularly when growing chickpeas, lentils and peas, which expand considerably during soaking and germination.

  • Harvest: approximately 2–4 days

Basic Jar-Sprouting Method

  1. Clean your equipment: Wash your hands, jar and draining lid thoroughly.
  2. Measure the seed: Use the quantity recommended for the variety you are growing.
  3. Rinse: Add cool drinking-quality water, gently swirl the seeds and drain.
  4. Soak: Cover the seeds generously with fresh water and soak for the recommended period.
  5. Drain thoroughly: Pour away all soaking water through the draining lid.
  6. Rinse again: Add fresh water, gently agitate the seeds and drain completely.
  7. Position the jar: Leave the jar with its opening angled downward over a bowl, rack or suitable draining surface.
  8. Rinse regularly: Rinse and drain approximately 2–3 times each day or as required by the variety and growing conditions.
  9. Maintain drainage and airflow: Do not allow germinating seeds to remain sitting in pooled water.
  10. Harvest: Harvest when the sprouts reach the appropriate stage for the variety being grown.
  11. Final rinse: Rinse thoroughly and drain well before use or refrigeration.

Using Both Jars

The two jars allow you to stagger crops or grow two different varieties at the same time.

For example:

  1. Begin one crop in the first jar.
  2. Start another variety in the second jar a few days later.
  3. Harvest the first crop when ready.
  4. Thoroughly clean and dry that jar.
  5. Begin another batch while the second crop continues growing.

This creates overlapping growing cycles and can provide a more regular supply of fresh sprouts.

Should You Mix the Seeds?

When first using the kit, grow the varieties separately.

The included seeds differ substantially in size, soaking time and growth rate. Keeping them separate makes it easier to learn how each behaves and prevents larger legumes from overcrowding smaller leafy varieties.

Different sprouts can be combined after harvest if desired.

Larger Seeds

Chickpeas, lentils and peas expand considerably after soaking.

Do not fill the jar excessively with dry seed. Leaving sufficient empty space improves rinsing, drainage and airflow as the sprouts develop.

Food Safety

Raw sprouts can carry harmful bacteria even when grown carefully.

  • Wash hands and equipment thoroughly before handling seeds or sprouts.
  • Use clean drinking-quality water.
  • Drain thoroughly after every rinse.
  • Do not leave sprouts sitting in standing water.
  • Keep jars and surrounding surfaces clean.
  • Refrigerate harvested sprouts promptly at 5°C or below.
  • Discard any crop that develops slime, mould, unusual discolouration or an unpleasant odour.
  • People at increased risk of foodborne illness should avoid raw or lightly cooked sprouts. Thorough cooking provides the lowest food-safety risk.

Cleaning Between Crops

After each harvest:

  1. Remove all remaining sprouts, seeds and hulls.
  2. Wash the jar and lid thoroughly.
  3. Rinse with clean water.
  4. Allow all components to dry completely.
  5. Begin the next crop only with clean, dry equipment.

Thank you Australian Wheatgrass for getting me into sprouts. I like sprouting all the peas and lentils together which is something I never thought I would like. They’re like a healthy crunchy snack that I eat throughout the day. They’re so good! The radish sprouts are too spicy to have on there own. It’s ok mixed with the alfalfa. Anyway.. keep up the good work!
