Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Red Cabbage Microgreen Seeds

Grow vivid red cabbage microgreens with mild, sweet cabbage flavour and purple-red stems. Winter Red seed also suits sprouting and mature cabbage growing, with microgreens ready in around 8–12 days.

Description

Red Cabbage Microgreen Seeds for Colourful Purple-Red Greens

Red Cabbage Microgreen Seeds produce an attractive crop of purple-red stems topped with green to purple-tinged cotyledons. The mild, fresh and slightly sweet cabbage flavour makes red cabbage a versatile choice for home growers, chefs and regular microgreen production.

Red cabbage is a relatively fast-growing brassica microgreen, typically reaching harvest size in approximately 8–12 days. Its combination of colour, delicate crunch and gentle flavour makes it particularly useful when you want visual contrast without the stronger heat of radish or mustard microgreens.

Fast-Growing Brassica Microgreens

The small seeds are normally dry-sown without pre-soaking onto a fine, evenly moist growing medium. After approximately 3–4 days of covered germination, the seedlings can be moved into good light where the stems and leaves develop their characteristic colour.

Red cabbage grows well in coco coir, fine seed-raising mix or another suitable microgreen medium. Once roots are established, bottom watering helps maintain even moisture while keeping the developing foliage relatively dry. A drainable microgreen grow tray is well suited to this growing method.

Mild Flavour for Salads, Wraps & Garnishes

Fresh red cabbage microgreens have a clean brassica flavour with a slightly sweet finish. Use them raw in salads, sandwiches, wraps, tacos and grain bowls, or scatter them over soups, eggs and savoury dishes immediately before serving.

The reddish-purple stems also make them particularly useful as an edible garnish. They combine well after harvest with milder green microgreens or stronger crops such as radish and mustard to create contrast in colour and flavour.

Red Cabbage Seeds for Home & Regular Tray Growing

OzSprout Red Cabbage Microgreen Seeds are available from 1g through to 500g, with pack sizes suited to small home-grown trays through to repeated microgreen production.

Because cabbage seed is small, accurate weighing and even sowing help create a uniform canopy while reducing overcrowding and unnecessary moisture around developing seedlings.

How to Grow Red Cabbage Microgreens

Red cabbage is a fast-growing brassica microgreen that is normally dry-sown without pre-soaking. It germinates readily under a short blackout period before being moved into good light, where the crop develops attractive purple-red stems and green to purple-tinged leaves.

For a broader overview of tray growing, see the OzSprout How to Grow Microgreens at Home guide.

What You Need

  • Red Cabbage Microgreen Seeds
  • A shallow microgreen tray with drainage holes
  • A solid lower tray for bottom watering
  • Coco coir, fine seed-raising mix or another suitable microgreen growing medium
  • Clean drinking-quality water
  • A second tray or suitable blackout cover
  • Bright natural light or a suitable grow light

Seed Rate

For a standard 25 × 50cm microgreen tray, use approximately:

12–15g dry seed per tray

Spread the seed evenly across the surface rather than allowing it to collect in thick patches.

Excessive density can restrict airflow and hold unnecessary moisture around developing stems and roots.

Pre-Soak

No pre-soak required.

Red cabbage is a small brassica seed and should normally be sown dry directly onto the prepared moist growing medium.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Clean your equipment. Wash and thoroughly rinse the growing tray, lower tray and blackout cover before use.
  2. Prepare the growing medium. Add approximately 2–3cm of coco coir, fine seed-raising mix or another suitable microgreen medium.
  3. Moisten the medium. Water evenly and allow excess water to drain. The medium should be consistently moist without being waterlogged.
  4. Measure the seed. Use approximately 12–15g of dry seed for a 25 × 50cm tray.
  5. Sow evenly. Broadcast the seed across the surface, taking care to avoid thick clumps.
  6. Press gently. Lightly press the seed against the growing medium to improve seed-to-medium contact.
  7. Mist if required. Use a fine spray to moisten the seed without washing it into piles.
  8. Cover the tray. Place another tray or opaque blackout cover over the crop for approximately 3–4 days.
  9. Check moisture daily. Keep the growing medium evenly moist, but avoid automatically adding water if sufficient moisture remains.
  10. Move into light. Once the seedlings are established, well rooted and beginning to lift the cover, remove it and provide bright natural light or suitable grow lights.
  11. Maintain airflow. Provide gentle airflow around the developing crop, particularly in warm or humid conditions.
  12. Bottom water once established. When the roots have developed through the growing medium, switch primarily to watering from below.

Blackout

Keep covered for approximately:

3–4 days

A second tray or opaque blackout cover is sufficient.

Heavy weighting is generally unnecessary for red cabbage.

Remove the cover once the seedlings are well established and pushing upward.

Pale or yellow seedlings immediately after blackout are normal and should begin greening once exposed to sufficient light.

Germination

Expect germination and establishment in approximately:

2–4 days

Red cabbage is a relatively quick-germinating brassica.

Maintain even moisture during this stage without leaving the growing medium saturated.

Temperature

Aim for approximately:

18–22°C

This provides suitable conditions for steady germination and compact growth.

Avoid excessive heat combined with high moisture and poor airflow.

Light & Airflow

Once the blackout cover is removed:

  • provide bright natural light or suitable grow lights;
  • maintain consistent light each day;
  • provide gentle airflow around the crop;
  • avoid excessive heat; and
  • prevent the foliage from remaining continually wet.

Good light encourages compact growth and stronger stem and leaf colour.

Watering

Keep the growing medium consistently moist rather than saturated.

During early establishment, mist or gently surface-water only when needed.

Once the roots have established, bottom watering is preferable because it directs water towards the root zone while helping keep the foliage drier.

For more detail, see How to Water Microgreens: Misting vs Bottom Watering.

Do not:

  • leave the tray permanently sitting in deep water;
  • repeatedly soak the foliage;
  • allow the medium to become waterlogged; or
  • grow the crop in stagnant, humid conditions.

Tips for Best Results

  • Do not pre-soak the seed.
  • Sow approximately 12–15g per 25 × 50cm tray.
  • Spread the seed evenly.
  • Avoid thick patches and overcrowding.
  • Use approximately 3–4 days of blackout.
  • Do not use heavy weighting.
  • Maintain even moisture without saturation.
  • Provide good light once uncovered.
  • Maintain airflow around the canopy.
  • Switch to bottom watering after roots establish.

Root Hairs vs Mould

Fine white hairs around newly developing roots are often normal root hairs.

Root hairs generally:

  • grow directly from individual roots;
  • appear relatively evenly around the root system; and
  • become less visible after watering.

Mould is more likely to spread irregularly between seeds, across the growing medium or onto stems and may be associated with slime, decay or an abnormal smell.

Cabbage and other brassicas commonly produce noticeable root hairs. If you are unsure, see Mould vs Root Hairs on Sprouts & Microgreens.

Harvest & Storage

Red cabbage microgreens are generally ready approximately:

8–12 days from sowing

Look for:

  • fully opened cotyledons;
  • healthy purple-red stems;
  • green to purple-tinged foliage;
  • compact, upright growth; and
  • the size and flavour you prefer.

Cut cleanly just above the growing medium using clean scissors or a sharp harvesting knife.

Where practical, harvest when the foliage is relatively dry rather than immediately after watering.

For more detailed post-harvest guidance, see How to Harvest & Store Microgreens.

Refrigerate harvested microgreens promptly in a clean container. If washed before storage, drain and dry them thoroughly first.

Clean Growing / Food Safety

Use clean trays, growing media, drinking-quality water and harvesting equipment.

Maintain good drainage and airflow and avoid continuously saturated growing conditions.

At harvest:

  • use clean scissors or a harvesting knife;
  • cut above the growing medium;
  • minimise growing medium and root material in the harvested crop; and
  • refrigerate promptly.

Discard any crop showing obvious mould, slime, decay, collapsed seedlings or an abnormal smell.

Seed Storage

Store unused seed sealed in a cool, dry and dark place away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

For longer-term storage, refrigeration can help maintain seed viability. Keep refrigerated seed sealed while it returns to room temperature before opening the package to reduce the risk of condensation.
