Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping rates are calculated at checkout based on your order size and weight, delivery address and available carrier services. We use Australia Post and other carriers to provide suitable delivery options and rates.

Dispatch

Orders are generally packed and dispatched within 0–2 business days (Monday–Friday), excluding public holidays and unusually busy periods.

Delivery Times

Delivery times begin from the date your order is dispatched. As a general guide, Australia Post Parcel Post usually takes 2–6 business days, while Express Post generally takes 1–3 business days where available.

Regional and remote destinations may take longer. Orders containing seed sent to Western Australia, Tasmania or other biosecurity-controlled destinations may also require additional processing or inspection.

Delivery estimates are provided as a guide only and can be affected by carrier delays, weather, peak periods and biosecurity requirements.

Tracking

All shipped orders include tracking. Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive an email with your tracking information so you can follow its progress.

Authority to Leave

Depending on the carrier and delivery service, your parcel may be left in a safe location if no one is available to receive it. You can provide delivery instructions during checkout where supported by the carrier; however, specific delivery requests cannot always be guaranteed.

Local Pickup – Riverstone, NSW

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Hulled Millet Grain – Australian Golden Millet

Cook Australian hulled millet as a fluffy grain, creamy porridge or soup ingredient, or mill it into flour for baking. Mild, nutty and available in bulk sizes Australia-wide.

Description

Hulled Millet Grain for Cooking, Porridge & Milling

Hulled millet is a versatile golden grain with a mild, slightly nutty flavour that works well in both sweet and savoury recipes. With the tough outer husk removed, the grain is ready for cooking and does not require overnight soaking.

Cook millet until tender and fluffy as an alternative to rice and other grains, use additional liquid for a creamy breakfast porridge, add it to soups and casseroles, or grind the dry grain into millet flour for home baking.

Cook Millet as a Fluffy Grain

Hulled millet can be simmered in water or stock to produce a tender grain for salads, grain bowls, curries, vegetable dishes and savoury sides. Its mild flavour pairs easily with herbs, spices, roasted vegetables, sauces and other ingredients.

For a deeper, nuttier flavour, millet can also be lightly toasted before cooking.

Make Creamy Millet Porridge

Use additional water, milk or your preferred plant-based milk and cook the millet for longer to create a softer, creamier texture.

Serve millet porridge with fruit, cinnamon, yoghurt, nuts, seeds or other breakfast toppings. Millet can also be incorporated into soups, stews and casseroles, where the small grains absorb flavour and add body to the finished dish.

Grind Hulled Millet into Millet Flour

Dry hulled millet can be ground using a suitable grain mill or high-powered grinder to produce millet flour. Use it in pancakes, flatbreads, muffins, biscuits, crackers and other suitable baking recipes, either on its own where appropriate or blended with other flours.

This gives hulled millet several practical culinary uses from one pantry ingredient: cook it whole, prepare it as porridge, add it to savoury dishes or mill it into flour.

Hulled Millet Is for Cooking – Not Sprouting

This product has had the tough outer husk removed for culinary use and is therefore supplied as hulled millet for cooking rather than millet seed for sprouting or planting.

If you want to grow millet sprouts, microgreens or mature millet plants, choose Millet Sprouting Seeds – Unhulled Golden Millet instead. The intact unhulled seed is specifically suited to germination and growing.

Home & Bulk Hulled Millet

OzSprout hulled millet is available from 500g through to 20kg bulk quantities, making it suitable for home kitchens, regular cooks, cafés, bakeries, food businesses and larger-volume users.

How to Cook & Use Hulled Millet

Hulled millet is ready for cooking because the tough outer husk has already been removed. It does not require overnight soaking.

How to Cook Fluffy Millet

  1. Rinse: Place the millet in a fine sieve and rinse thoroughly under clean running water.
  2. Measure: Use approximately 1 cup millet to 2½ cups water or stock.
  3. Optional – toast: For a deeper, nuttier flavour, drain the millet well and toast it gently in a saucepan for a few minutes before adding the cooking liquid.
  4. Bring to the boil: Add the water or stock and bring to the boil.
  5. Simmer: Reduce the heat, cover and simmer gently for approximately 25–35 minutes, or until the millet is tender and the liquid has been absorbed.
  6. Rest: Remove from the heat and leave covered for approximately 5–10 minutes.
  7. Fluff: Gently separate the cooked grains with a fork before serving.

The exact cooking time can vary slightly depending on the grain, saucepan and desired texture.

How to Make Millet Porridge

For a softer, creamier result, use more liquid and cook the millet until the grains begin to soften and break down.

  1. Rinse the millet thoroughly.
  2. Combine approximately 1 cup millet with 3–4 cups water, milk or plant-based milk.
  3. Bring gently to the boil.
  4. Reduce the heat and simmer, stirring occasionally.
  5. Continue cooking until the millet reaches your preferred soft, creamy consistency.
  6. Add additional liquid during cooking if required.
  7. Serve with fruit, cinnamon, yoghurt, nuts, seeds or your preferred toppings.

Other Ways to Use Hulled Millet

  • Serve instead of rice with curries and vegetable dishes.
  • Add cooked millet to salads and grain bowls.
  • Cook into soups and stews.
  • Add to casseroles and savoury bakes.
  • Prepare as sweet or savoury porridge.
  • Use cooled cooked millet in meal-prep dishes.
  • Grind dry millet into millet flour.
  • Use millet flour in pancakes, muffins, flatbreads, crackers and other suitable baked goods.

How to Make Millet Flour

  1. Make sure the millet is completely dry.
  2. Add small quantities to a suitable grain mill or high-powered grinder.
  3. Grind until the desired flour consistency is reached.
  4. Sieve the flour if a particularly fine texture is required.
  5. Use as required in suitable cooking and baking recipes.

Cooking vs Sprouting

This is hulled millet intended for cooking.

Removing the outer husk makes millet more suitable for culinary use but also means it is not the appropriate product for reliable germination.

For growing sprouts, microgreens or mature millet plants, use viable unhulled millet seed instead.

Storage

Store dry hulled millet in a tightly sealed container in a cool, dry and dark location away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

For longer-term storage, the sealed grain can be refrigerated or frozen.

Freshly milled millet flour has more surface area exposed to air than intact grain. Keep it tightly sealed and refrigerate or freeze it if it will not be used promptly.

Grant

This is the best quality organic hulled millet I have come across. I’ve purchased from several places and always either get lots of unhulled grains, blackened bits/grains (mold?), or grains that look half ground up. The millet I have purchased twice from here is absolutely outstanding quality!

Thanks Grant!
