Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping rates are calculated at checkout based on your order size and weight, delivery address and available carrier services. We use Australia Post and other carriers to provide suitable delivery options and rates.

Dispatch

Orders are generally packed and dispatched within 0–2 business days (Monday–Friday), excluding public holidays and unusually busy periods.

Delivery Times

Delivery times begin from the date your order is dispatched. As a general guide, Australia Post Parcel Post usually takes 2–6 business days, while Express Post generally takes 1–3 business days where available.

Regional and remote destinations may take longer. Orders containing seed sent to Western Australia, Tasmania or other biosecurity-controlled destinations may also require additional processing or inspection.

Delivery estimates are provided as a guide only and can be affected by carrier delays, weather, peak periods and biosecurity requirements.

Tracking

All shipped orders include tracking. Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive an email with your tracking information so you can follow its progress.

Authority to Leave

Depending on the carrier and delivery service, your parcel may be left in a safe location if no one is available to receive it. You can provide delivery instructions during checkout where supported by the carrier; however, specific delivery requests cannot always be guaranteed.

Local Pickup – Riverstone, NSW

Local pickup can be selected at checkout when available. Please allow approximately 2–3 business days for your order to be prepared.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Millet Sprouting Seeds – Unhulled Golden Millet

Grow quick, mild millet sprouts with Australian-grown unhulled golden millet. Suitable for sprouting, microgreens and growing to maturity, with bulk sizes available Australia-wide.

Description

Millet Sprouting Seeds for Quick, Mild Sprouts

Grow fresh, crisp sprouts at home with our millet sprouting seeds. This unhulled golden millet is suitable for germination and produces tender young sprouts with a mild, slightly nutty flavour. Millet is fast growing and is generally ready to harvest in approximately 2–5 days.

It is straightforward to grow indoors using a Glass Sprouting Jar or another suitable sprouter, with regular rinsing, thorough drainage and good airflow throughout the growing cycle.

Mild, Crisp Millet Sprouts

Millet sprouts have a mild flavour and crisp texture that works well in salads, sandwiches, wraps, grain bowls and other savoury meals. Shorter sprouts generally provide the firmest texture, while allowing the shoots to develop further produces a more noticeable young green shoot.

Millet requires only a moderate soak before germination. After soaking, the main requirements are consistent rinsing, complete drainage and adequate airflow between rinses.

Unhulled Millet for Germination

This product is unhulled millet intended for germination. Hulled millet commonly sold as a cooking grain has undergone processing that can damage or remove structures needed for reliable germination, so it is generally unsuitable for sprouting.

If your main purpose is cooking millet as a grain, a hulled culinary millet is the more appropriate choice. The outer husk on this unhulled sprouting seed makes it unsuitable for normal whole-grain cooking unless it is properly dehulled first.

Sprouting, Microgreens & Garden Growing

This listing is primarily focused on growing short millet sprouts in a jar or sprouter. The same viable seed can also be grown for longer in trays to produce young millet greens or microgreens, or planted outdoors in suitable conditions and grown through to maturity.

Home & Bulk Millet Sprouting Seeds

OzSprout unhulled millet seed is available from 500g through to 20kg bulk quantities, making it suitable for home sprouters, regular growers, retailers, resellers and larger-volume users.

How to Grow Millet Sprouts

Millet is a fast-growing sprouting seed that performs well indoors in a clean glass jar or suitable sprouter.

If you are new to the process, see How to Grow Sprouts in a Jar for the general jar-sprouting method.

What You Need

  • Approximately 3–5 tablespoons / 30–50g of unhulled millet seed
  • A clean 500ml wide-mouth glass jar or suitable sprouter
  • A fine-mesh sprouting lid or draining screen
  • A draining stand, rack or bowl
  • Clean, drinking-quality water

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Clean your equipment: Wash your hands and thoroughly clean the jar, lid and utensils before starting.
  2. Measure the seed: Add approximately 4 tablespoons / around 40g of millet seed to a 500ml sprouting jar. Remove any visibly damaged or deteriorated seed.
  3. Rinse and soak: Rinse thoroughly, then cover generously with clean drinking-quality water. Soak for approximately 6–10 hours.
  4. Drain thoroughly: Discard the soaking water, rinse the millet again and drain completely.
  5. Position for drainage: Keep the jar tilted with the opening facing downward so excess moisture can escape while air circulates.
  6. Rinse regularly: Rinse and thoroughly drain the developing sprouts approximately 2–3 times each day.
  7. Maintain suitable conditions: Keep the jar in a well-ventilated position away from hot direct sunlight. A growing temperature of approximately 16–25°C is suitable.
  8. Allow the shoots to develop: Small roots and shoots should begin appearing as the seed germinates. Continue rinsing and draining consistently.
  9. Green if preferred: Near harvest, brief exposure to bright indirect light can encourage greener developing shoots. Avoid hot direct sunlight.
  10. Harvest: Millet sprouts are generally ready in approximately 2–5 days, depending on temperature and your preferred sprout length.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use viable unhulled millet intended for germination.
  • Hulled culinary millet generally does not germinate reliably.
  • Do not overcrowd the jar.
  • Maintain thorough drainage after every rinse.
  • Do not leave the seed sitting in standing water.
  • Maintain good airflow throughout germination.
  • Avoid excessively hot conditions.
  • Short sprouts generally provide the firmest, crispest texture.
  • Discard sprouts that become slimy, show obvious mould or decay, or develop a sour, rotten or unusually musty smell.

Harvest & Storage

Give the finished millet sprouts a final thorough rinse and drain them as completely as practical.

Transfer the well-drained sprouts to a clean covered container and refrigerate promptly.

Use while fresh and discard them if their appearance, smell or texture deteriorates.

Food Safety

Raw sprouts can carry harmful bacteria even when carefully grown at home.

Always use clean equipment and drinking-quality water, maintain thorough drainage and refrigerate harvested sprouts promptly.

People at increased risk from foodborne illness, including pregnant women, young children, some older people and people with compromised immunity, should avoid raw or lightly cooked sprouts.

Thorough cooking reduces the food-safety risk associated with raw sprouts.
