Care information

Proper storage and handling can help maintain seed quality and germination performance. Keep seeds sealed, dry and protected from heat, moisture and direct sunlight.

Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Handling: Use clean, dry utensils when removing seed from larger packs and return the remaining seed to refrigerated storage promptly after use.

Before Sowing or Sprouting: Inspect seeds before use and discard any showing signs of moisture damage, mould, unusual odour or deterioration. When growing edible sprouts or microgreens, use clean equipment and drinking-quality water.

Best Quality: Use seed while fresh and follow any product-specific storage, germination and growing information provided in the Specifications, growing instructions or product packaging.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping rates are calculated at checkout based on your order size and weight, delivery address and available carrier services. We use Australia Post and other carriers to provide suitable delivery options and rates.

Dispatch

Orders are generally packed and dispatched within 0–2 business days (Monday–Friday), excluding public holidays and unusually busy periods.

Delivery Times

Delivery times begin from the date your order is dispatched. As a general guide, Australia Post Parcel Post usually takes 2–6 business days, while Express Post generally takes 1–3 business days where available.

Regional and remote destinations may take longer. Orders containing seed sent to Western Australia, Tasmania or other biosecurity-controlled destinations may also require additional processing or inspection.

Delivery estimates are provided as a guide only and can be affected by carrier delays, weather, peak periods and biosecurity requirements.

Tracking

All shipped orders include tracking. Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive an email with your tracking information so you can follow its progress.

Authority to Leave

Depending on the carrier and delivery service, your parcel may be left in a safe location if no one is available to receive it. You can provide delivery instructions during checkout where supported by the carrier; however, specific delivery requests cannot always be guaranteed.

Local Pickup – Riverstone, NSW

Local pickup can be selected at checkout when available. Please allow approximately 2–3 business days for your order to be prepared.

Please do not attend the warehouse without an appointment. All pickups are strictly by prior arrangement.

Seed Biosecurity – WA & Tasmania

Seeds and other plant material may be subject to state biosecurity restrictions.

Western Australia has specific entry requirements for seed, and seed consignments may be inspected by Quarantine WA. Tasmania also regulates the importation of viable seed, with additional requirements applying to certain species and consignments.

Requirements vary by seed species, quantity and destination and may change over time. Customers in Western Australia, Tasmania and other biosecurity-controlled areas should check current state requirements before ordering.

Where an order contains seed that cannot meet applicable biosecurity requirements, we may need to contact you before dispatch or remove affected products from the order.

Purple Sango Radish Sprouting Seeds

Grow vivid purple, peppery radish sprouts with Australian-grown Sango seed. Ideal for sprouting, colourful microgreens and mature radishes, with home and bulk sizes available Australia-wide.

Description

Purple Sango Radish Sprouting Seeds for Spicy, Colourful Sprouts

Add bold radish flavour and striking colour to your home-grown sprouts with Purple Sango Radish Sprouting Seeds. Sango produces crisp young sprouts with purple to burgundy colouring and a strong, fresh peppery flavour.

Sango is considerably stronger in flavour than mild leafy sprouts, so for most home sprouting we recommend using it as part of a mixed sprout crop rather than filling the jar with Sango alone. Around 1 teaspoon of Sango seed per 500ml jar adds plenty of colour and spicy radish character without overpowering the finished mix.

Best Mixed with Mild Sprouting Seeds

Purple Sango works particularly well with milder varieties such as Alfalfa Sprouting Seeds, Broccoli Sprouting Seeds or Red Clover Sprouting Seeds.

For a 500ml jar, start with approximately 1 teaspoon of Sango seed added to your usual quantity of the milder base seed. The Sango adds a peppery bite and purple colour while the alfalfa, broccoli or clover keeps the overall flavour balanced.

Spicy Purple Radish Sprouts

Sango radish sprouts have a firm, crunchy texture and pronounced radish heat. They work particularly well in salads, sandwiches, wraps, grain bowls and savoury garnishes where a small amount can add noticeable flavour and colour.

Once the cotyledons begin opening, brief exposure to bright indirect light helps encourage the characteristic purple and burgundy colouring before harvest.

Designed for Jar-Grown Sprouts

This product page is specifically focused on growing Purple Sango sprouts in a jar or suitable sprouter. The seeds are soaked first, then rinsed and thoroughly drained several times each day until the young shoots have developed.

Sango can be grown on its own if you specifically want a very strong radish sprout, but its intense flavour means a small quantity blended with milder sprouts is our preferred method for everyday use.

Purple Sango Sprouts vs Microgreens

The same variety can also be grown as colourful tray-grown microgreens using a different method. For larger purple shoots grown on a growing medium, see Purple Radish Microgreen Seeds.

Other Growing Uses

Viable Sango seed can also be planted outdoors and grown beyond the sprout or microgreen stage as a mature radish crop.

How to Grow Purple Sango Radish Sprouts

Purple Sango radish produces colourful sprouts with a strong, peppery radish flavour.

Although Sango can be grown by itself, OzSprout recommends using approximately 1 teaspoon per 500ml jar together with a milder sprouting seed such as alfalfa, broccoli or red clover. A relatively small amount of Sango adds plenty of spice and colour to the finished mix.

Recommended Sango Sprout Mix

For a 500ml jar:

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Clean your equipment: Wash your hands and thoroughly clean the jar, lid and utensils before starting.
  2. Measure the Sango: Add approximately 1 teaspoon of Purple Sango seed to the jar.
  3. Add your mild sprouting seed: Add your normal jar quantity of alfalfa, broccoli or red clover, while avoiding overcrowding.
  4. Rinse: Rinse the combined seed thoroughly using clean drinking-quality water.
  5. Soak: Cover generously with water. A soak of approximately 6 hours is a practical compromise for a mixed batch containing Sango with alfalfa, broccoli or clover.
  6. Drain thoroughly: Discard all soaking water, rinse again and drain completely.
  7. Position for airflow: Keep the jar tilted with the opening facing downward so excess moisture can escape and air can circulate.
  8. Rinse regularly: Rinse and thoroughly drain the developing sprouts approximately 2–3 times each day.
  9. Maintain suitable conditions: Keep the jar in a well-ventilated position away from hot direct sunlight.
  10. Develop the colour: Once the cotyledons begin opening, provide bright indirect light to encourage stronger purple and burgundy colouring.
  11. Harvest: Begin checking the mixed sprouts from around day 3 and harvest when the different varieties have developed to your preferred stage, generally within approximately 3–6 days.

Why Use Only a Teaspoon of Sango?

Purple Sango has a considerably stronger flavour than alfalfa, broccoli or red clover.

Using approximately 1 teaspoon per 500ml jar gives the finished sprouts:

  • A noticeable peppery radish bite
  • Attractive purple colour
  • More flavour without overwhelming the mild sprouts
  • A more balanced mix for sandwiches, salads and wraps

You can adjust the amount slightly after trying your first batch, but a teaspoon is a good starting point.

Tips for Best Results

  • Do not overcrowd the jar.
  • Drain completely after every rinse.
  • Maintain good airflow.
  • Sango grows quickly, so check the crop daily.
  • Bright indirect light near harvest helps develop the purple colouring.
  • Fine white root hairs can form around healthy radish roots and may temporarily resemble mould.
  • If the finished mix is too spicy for your taste, reduce the Sango quantity in your next batch.
  • Discard sprouts that become slimy, show obvious mould or decay, or develop a sour, rotten or unusually musty smell.

Growing Sango on Its Own

Purple Sango can also be grown as a standalone sprout if you specifically enjoy a strong radish flavour.

For most customers, however, we recommend using it as a spicy addition to a milder sprout mix rather than making an entire jar of Sango sprouts.

Sprouts vs Purple Radish Microgreens

These instructions are for jar-grown sprouts.

For larger tray-grown Sango shoots with purple stems and leaves, use Purple Radish Microgreen Seeds. The microgreen method uses dry seed, growing medium and a later harvest stage.

Harvest & Storage

Give the finished sprouts a final thorough rinse and drain them as completely as practical.

For an easy method of washing the finished sprouts, removing loose seed hulls and preparing them for refrigeration, see How to Harvest, Wash & Store Sprouts After Growing.

Transfer the well-drained sprouts to a clean covered container and refrigerate promptly.

Use while fresh and discard them if their appearance, smell or texture deteriorates.

Food Safety

Raw sprouts can carry harmful bacteria even when carefully grown at home.

Always use clean equipment and drinking-quality water, maintain thorough drainage and refrigerate harvested sprouts promptly.

People at increased risk from foodborne illness, including pregnant women, young children, some older people and people with compromised immunity, should avoid raw or lightly cooked sprouts.

Thorough cooking reduces the food-safety risk associated with raw sprouts.
