Storage: For best long-term storage, keep seeds refrigerated in a clean, airtight container or securely sealed packaging. A refrigerator at approximately 4°C provides a cool, stable environment that can help maintain seed viability. If refrigeration is not practical, store seeds in the coolest available dry, dark and temperature-stable location.

Moisture: Keep seeds dry at all times during storage. Excess moisture or humidity can reduce seed quality and encourage premature germination, mould or deterioration. Always reseal opened packaging promptly.

Removing Seeds from Refrigeration: Keep refrigerated seeds sealed while they return to room temperature before opening the package or container. This helps prevent condensation from forming on cold seeds and introducing unwanted moisture.

Temperature: Avoid repeated temperature changes and do not store seeds near ovens, heaters, windows, vehicles, sheds or other areas exposed to excessive or fluctuating heat.

Delivery times begin from the date your order is dispatched. As a general guide, Australia Post Parcel Post usually takes 2–6 business days, while Express Post generally takes 1–3 business days where available.

Regional and remote destinations may take longer. Orders containing seed sent to Western Australia, Tasmania or other biosecurity-controlled destinations may also require additional processing or inspection.

Organic Oat Grass Microgreen Seeds for Tray Growing

Grow dense, fresh green oat grass with our organic whole oat seeds. These whole unhulled oats retain their natural outer hull, making them well suited to germination and tray growing for oat grass and microgreens.

Oat grass grows in a similar way to wheatgrass and barley grass. After a short pre-soak, the seed can be sown densely across a moist growing medium and grown into upright green blades that are generally ready to harvest in approximately 8–12 days.

Grow Fresh Oat Grass at Home

Whole oat seed develops vigorous green shoots with a mild, fresh and grassy flavour. Harvest the young grass while it is green and tender for juicing, blending or other fresh preparations.

For reliable results, sow the seed evenly rather than piling it in thick layers, maintain consistent moisture during germination and provide good airflow once the shoots begin to establish.

Whole Unhulled Oats for Oat Grass

This product is supplied as whole unhulled oat seed for growing. The natural hull protects the grain and makes it better suited to oat-grass production and planting than dehulled oat groats.

Although the whole seed will germinate, the coarse fibrous hull means the early grain-and-root stage is not the preferred form for direct eating. For culinary oat kernels used for cooking, porridge, milling or short dehulled sprouts, choose OzSprout's separate Organic Oat Groats product instead.

Grow Oat Grass in Trays

For home production, soak the whole oats before spreading them densely across approximately 2–4cm of moist soil, coco fibre or another suitable microgreen growing medium.

Cover the seed during early establishment, then move the developing shoots into bright light once they are well rooted. A drainable Microgreen & Wheatgrass Grow Tray is well suited to this style of growing and allows excess water to drain away from the root zone.

Other Growing Uses

Whole viable oat seed can also be planted beyond the oat-grass stage and grown into mature oat plants where suitable space and conditions are available. It may also be grown as green fodder where appropriate.

How to Grow Oat Grass

Whole unhulled oat seed is best suited to growing oat grass and tray-grown microgreens. The natural hull remains around the grain and helps protect the seed during germination.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Measure the seed: Use enough oat seed to produce a dense, even layer across the growing surface without creating thick piles of overlapping seed.
Rinse: Rinse the oats thoroughly using clean drinking-quality water.
Soak: Cover generously with water and soak for approximately 4–8 hours.
Drain thoroughly: Discard the soaking water and allow the seed to drain well.
Prepare the tray: Add approximately 2–4cm of moist growing medium and level the surface.
Sow evenly: Spread the soaked oat seed densely and evenly across the surface. Press gently to establish good contact with the growing medium.
Cover during early germination: Place a second tray or suitable cover over the crop during early establishment. Do not seal the crop airtight.
Maintain moisture: Keep the growing medium consistently damp but not waterlogged.
Remove the cover: Once the shoots are established and beginning to lift the cover, uncover the crop.
Provide light: Move the tray into bright natural light or under a suitable grow light.
Maintain airflow: Provide good ventilation around the developing crop and avoid continuously wet foliage.
Water carefully: Once a strong root system has developed, bottom watering can help provide moisture while keeping the foliage drier.
Maintain temperature: Grow at approximately 16–25°C and avoid excessive heat.
Harvest: Oat grass is generally ready to harvest in approximately 8–12 days. Cut the young green blades cleanly just above the growing medium.

Tips for Best Results

Can You Eat the Short Sprouts?

These oats retain their natural outer hull. Although they germinate readily, the hull remains coarse and fibrous, so the early seed-and-root stage is not the preferred form for direct human consumption.
